James Lavadour is one of the Northwest’s most revered painters, widely recognized for his captivating abstract landscapes, often interpreted from and inspired by the geography of his lifelong home on the Umatilla Indian Reservation.

For YOU IN MIND, Lavadour has completed an important new painting, Conduit, which brings nearly twenty years of pointed investigation of painting into his immediate view. Lavadour started painting the thirty-six panels that comprise Conduit in 2000, a critical period of movement toward abstraction for the master artist. In Conduit, the panels appear as found, overpainted, and re-presented in negotiation with those paintings that were newly completed in his studio. This precise act of resistance to the catalogue raisonné is a fitting response to Kristy Edmunds’ oft employed, simple, yet catalyzing, act of permission to the artist.

Lavadour is represented locally by PDX CONTEMPORARY ART.
