Catherine Opie is a photographer studying the relationships between mainstream and alternative society. She incorporates the concept of community in her work and investigates through her imagery perplexing questions about relationships to community.

For Converge 45, Opie presents two bodies of work from a series of photographs of public gatherings and demonstrations of diverse communities. Opie documents and gives voice to social phenomena in America today. She received her BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from California Institute of the Arts, Los Angeles. Opie is currently a tenured professor at UCLA and on the board of the Andy Warhol Foundation. In 2016, she became a member of the National Academy and received the Archives of American Art Medal. Other awards include the President’s Award for Lifetime Achievement, the United States Artist Fellowship, the Larry Aldrich Award and Washington University Freund Fellowship. She is represented by Regen Projects in Los Angeles and Lehmann Maupin in New York.
