Ann Hamilton

B. 1956 Lima, Ohio

Lives and works in Columbus, Ohio

Ann Hamilton is a visual artist internationally recognized for the sensory surrounds of her large-scale multi-media installations. Using time as process and material, her methods of making serve as an invocation of place, of collective voice, of communities past and of labor present.

For YOU IN MIND (Disjecta), Ann Hamilton exhibits O N E E V E R Y O N E, an 896-page newsprint book with seven unique covers. Ten thousand copies of the book were published as a component of Hamilton’s 2017 project of the same name for University of Texas at Austin’s Dell Medical School, during which she photographed more than five hundred members of the Austin community who had ever received or provided care. Each was photographed through a membrane that obscured all but the closest gestures and features. Accompanying the book is a newspaper with images and writing addressing issues of care, empathy and recognition, by contributors Laurel Braitman, Matthew Goulish, Kris Paulsen, Nancy Princenthal, Brian Rotman, Natalie Shapero, Meg Shevenock, and Kathleen Stewart. Both objects are intended as gifts. Hamilton is represented locally by Elizabeth Leach Gallery.
