2016 Visitors’ Weekend

CONVERGE 45 HOSTED A VISITORS’ WEEKEND JULY 29-31 THAT PROVIDED AN IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE FOR VISITORS, LOCAL ARTS ENTHUSIASTS, ARTS ADMINISTRATORS, AND ARTISTS.

FRIDAY, JULY 29, 2016

Kick-off event at Wieden + Kennedy including E & A Empathy Affect viewing and a reception. Kristy Edmunds and Converge 45 Board Chair, Elizabeth Leach, welcomed an at-capacity crowd.

SATURDAY, JULY 30, 2016

Sara Krajewski, The Robert and Mercedes Eichholz Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Portland Art Museum, led a special tour of the Josh Kline: Freedom. Next, guests gathered at the Whitsell Auditorium for Creative Migration: A Conversation , a discussion featuring Edmunds; Irene Hoffman, Phillips Director and Chief Curator, SITE Santa Fe; Wallace Whitney, artist, curator, and co-founder, CANADA, New York, and visiting curator for The Ford Family Foundation’s Visual Arts Program. The discussion was moderated by Kristan Kennedy, Chief Curator at Portland Institute for Contemporary Art. After the talk, visitors were encouraged to explore Portland on their own using Converge 45’s cohesive map of 44 regional museums, galleries, and alternative spaces. In the late afternoon at Bruce Guenther, former Chief Curator at Portland Art Museum, led a VIP tour of Bruce Nauman: Language Body and the artist led a tour of David Horvitz: The Studio Rent Editions: 2010-Ongoing at PNCA. A dinner for 200 guests followed featuring four of Portland’s nationally praised chefs—Peter Cho, Tommy Habetz, Maya Lovelace, and Mika Paredes. The evening concluded with an after-party produced by S1, an experimental artist-run space in Portland.

SUNDAY, JULY 31, 2016

Visitors attended a special viewing of the Portland 2016 Biennial at Disjecta, followed by a visit to Reed College for a casual picnic lunch and special viewing of Northwest Dreaming: Postwar Subjectivity and the Image of the Artist. The weekend concluded with Kristy Edmunds and Stephanie Snyder, John and Anne Hauberg Curator and Director, Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery, Reed College, leading a participatory conversation about Northwest Dreaming along with closing thoughts about Converge 45’s inaugural programming.
