“Northwest Dreaming: Postwar Subjectivity and the Image of the Artist”
Douglas F. Cooley Memorial Art Gallery, Reed College
3203 SE Woodstock Blvd.
In 1952, ethnographic filmmaker Robert Gardner created a portrait of Northwest painter and spiritualist Mark Tobey that positions the artist inside of his work as an exploratory subject. “Northwest Dreaming” continues Gardner’s experiment by exhibiting the film amidst a body of postwar paintings that navigate the interior life of the artist-self.
